Holistic Life & Performance Coaching

What is Coaching?

What is it that  holds us back from having what we want in our lives, relationships, work or business? We have all heard stories of people creating extraordinary change for themselves; people that have moved from financial devastation, sadness and despair to experiencing energy, vitality, happiness and amazing personal and professional success.

What is the difference between Coaching and Counselling

What makes one person’s experience of life different to another’s?

Decades of research has revealed that the only difference between us experiencing happiness as opposed to sadness simply comes down to the patterns of thinking we reproduce in our minds. This is where coaching can assist. By understanding what is holding us back and what thoughts, feelings and behaviours we can change, we are able to then have the experiences we want to have in our lives.

Today coaching is a very broadly used term and it seems as though every second person you encounter claims to be a coach of some sort. This is why it is important to find the coach that will have the right skills and experience to help you get the results you are looking for.

The term “Coach” derives from the Middle English word coache, meaning “a wagon or carriage”. A coach is described as someone who assists others to reach their goals in one or more specific area of their lives; such as sports performance, business goals, relationship and personal issues etc. The aim is to take you from where you are now, to where you want to be.  In coaching getting clear on your outcome and purpose is the very first priority.

There are two types of coaching; the first is described as Action Coaching the second is referred to as Transformational Coaching.  So what is the difference between the two?

Action Coaching focuses on the doing, the actions, and the steps that are required to get a specific outcome, to reach an intended target or goal.  The emphasis here is on the environment and is largely external, focusing on what to DO  in order to HAVE what you want.

Transformational Coaching is all about who you need to BE.  It focuses on internal processes, specifically how we think, and on the feelings we choose to immerse ourselves in.  When we create new and resourceful behavioural strategies, and both thinking and emotional patterns, we are able to make profound and permanent changes in our personal lives, health, relationships and professional lives.

Transformation Coaching is the primary form of coaching I choose when working with my clients, to create real and permanent change. This form of coaching does incorporate some action coaching, as well as a number or other modalities including Neuro-linguistic-Programming (NLP).

In coaching we look at seven levels:

(developed by Robert Dilts)

Environmental factors – This is all about the external environment.  Your environment will influence how you see your life and what is possible for you.  If your environment does not support who you are becoming then changes on this level must be made.

Behavioural factors – It is your habits and the behaviours you are choosing to engage in that determine your results ( good or bad).  What habits are supporting you and what do you need to change to start seeing different outcomes?

Capabilities – This level refers to your current ability and skills and is used to identify the strategies and mental maps that will lead you to achieving success and happiness.  They reveal the current limitations and actions that are able to be implemented and altered as necessary.

Beliefs and Values – Our beliefs are those things that we feel certain about in life, they reflect what is possible for us, what we a capable of having, doing and achieving.  When you truly believe in something what are you willing to do? The thing is that most of our beliefs are unconscious, having been formed between the ages 0-7 years.  After the foundations of our beliefs have been laid our minds source evidence to support those beliefs.  If we hold on to outdated beliefs about who we are and what we can or cannot do, we limit ourselves, our careers, relationships and our ability to experience fulfilment.

Our values are our rules about what is important in life; such as family, truth, integrity, fun etc.  The order in which we rate our values will determine where we place our focus in life.  Where are you placing most of your focus? What takes your time?  Is is getting you the results in life that you truly desire?

Identity factors – this is all about who you perceive yourself to be, what is your role, your worth, your mission? When your identity is not clear you can be at risk of attaching your identity to a place it does not belong, or you may unconsciously hold on to an old identity that does not serve you anymore.  It is common for people experiencing challenge at this level to feel lost and lacking in direction, motivation and the inspiration needed to have a happy and fulfilling life.

“Spiritual” factors – this is all about our sense of fulfillment and purpose.  It is all about connecting with your ultimate vision for your life…. your “Why”.  Unfortunately it a common thing for people to not have ever considered this , and as a result find themselves feeling disconnected, disolutioned and lost.  What is your why? What is it that you were once passionate about?  When you connect with your “Why” the how will reveal itself.
